Acerbis rear chain guide – precise OEM-style replacement for stable chain control

The Acerbis chain guide is a quality replacement for the original rear guide positioned around the rear sprocket. Its purpose is to keep the drive chain on the correct path, limit unwanted lateral movement and support smooth operation of the complete final-drive system.

During motocross, enduro and other off-road riding, the guide is exposed to stones, mud, sand, vibration and continuous interaction with the moving chain. It should therefore be regarded as a wear component that requires regular inspection and timely replacement.

The guide uses a durable polyamide body together with a dedicated sliding surface that provides a controlled contact area for the chain. Its application-specific OEM-style shape allows the correct version to install at the original mounting points without drilling, cutting or other modification.

Accurate chain guidance around the rear sprocket

The rear chain guide helps keep the chain correctly positioned as it approaches and leaves the rear sprocket.

This is particularly important during:

  • hard acceleration,

  • engine braking,

  • jump landings,

  • large suspension movements,

  • deep ruts,

  • rocky or broken terrain.

Under these conditions the chain can move both vertically and laterally. The guide limits excessive displacement and helps return it to the correct path in relation to the rear sprocket.

Helps protect the complete chain drive

Correct chain guidance can also contribute to the service life of the remaining final-drive components.

A heavily worn, cracked or deformed guide may allow the chain to run less accurately, potentially contributing to:

  • irregular chain movement,

  • increased stress on chain links,

  • faster sprocket wear,

  • additional guide wear,

  • unwanted contact with surrounding components.

The guide does not replace correct chain slack or alignment, but it forms an important part of the complete system.

Durable polyamide body

The main structural section is manufactured predominantly from polyamide, commonly known as nylon.

This material is well suited to off-road use because it combines:

  • good mechanical strength,

  • toughness,

  • impact resistance,

  • low weight,

  • resistance to repeated loading,

  • resistance to normal dirt and moisture.

Polyamide makes it possible to produce a robust guide without unnecessary weight while still tolerating vibration and impacts encountered in demanding terrain.

Sliding surface for chain contact

Inside the guide is a dedicated sliding section over which the chain directly passes.

Its purpose is to provide a controlled contact surface, limit unnecessary friction and protect the main structural body from direct contact with the steel chain links.

This sliding area is one of the most highly loaded parts of the complete guide and gradually wears during normal use.

Inspect it particularly when:

  • washing the motorcycle,

  • lubricating the chain,

  • adjusting chain slack,

  • replacing the chain and sprockets,

  • servicing the rear wheel.

A normal wear component

Even durable materials cannot withstand continuous chain contact indefinitely.

Over time the guide may develop:

  • deeper chain grooves,

  • thinning of the sliding area,

  • side wear,

  • cracking,

  • deformation,

  • impact damage from stones.

Wear rate depends on the motorcycle and operating conditions.

Important factors include:

  • engine power,

  • riding style,

  • chain slack,

  • sand and mud contamination,

  • chain and sprocket condition,

  • maintenance frequency,

  • terrain.

Sand and mud increase wear

Off-road riding naturally allows contamination into the guide.

Sand, dust and small stones can mix with chain lubricant to create an abrasive compound that accelerates wear of the sliding surface.

After riding, it is good practice to:

  • remove heavy mud deposits,

  • clean inside the guide,

  • inspect the wear surfaces,

  • verify that the chain moves freely.

Regular cleaning also makes cracks and excessive wear easier to identify.

How to identify a worn guide

Replacement is recommended if you find:

  • a very deep chain groove,

  • heavily reduced sliding material,

  • cracks in the body,

  • broken cage sections,

  • impact deformation,

  • excessive play,

  • loose mounting points,

  • chain contact in areas where it should not occur.

Do not wait until the sliding surface is completely worn through or the guide begins to break apart.

Inspect when replacing the chain and sprockets

Whenever fitting a new chain or sprocket, inspect the complete final-drive guidance system.

In addition to the rear guide, check:

  • the swingarm chain slider,

  • upper and lower chain rollers,

  • countershaft sprocket,

  • rear sprocket,

  • chain adjusters,

  • chain alignment,

  • correct chain slack.

A new chain kit should ideally operate with guiding components that are also in good condition.

A heavily worn guide may compromise the operation of otherwise new final-drive parts.

Correct chain slack supports longer service life

A chain that is too loose has more freedom to move and may strike the guide more often and with greater force.

A chain that is too tight can create excessive loads throughout the final drive as the rear suspension compresses.

Correct adjustment helps protect:

  • the chain,

  • rear sprocket,

  • countershaft sprocket,

  • bearings,

  • chain guide.

Always follow the motorcycle manufacturer’s chain-slack specification and measurement procedure.

Accurate OEM-style fit

The Acerbis guide is designed as a direct replacement for the original component on a specific motorcycle application.

The correct version matches:

  • original location,

  • mounting points,

  • chain-path width,

  • position relative to the rear sprocket,

  • swingarm design.

No additional modification should be required.

Installation does not involve:

  • drilling,

  • cutting,

  • grinding,

  • heating,

  • altering the swingarm.

Straightforward replacement

On most applications, replacement is a normal service operation.

Recommended basic procedure:

  1. secure the motorcycle safely,

  2. thoroughly clean the guide area,

  3. remove the original component,

  4. inspect the mounting points,

  5. install the replacement guide,

  6. use the appropriate hardware,

  7. tighten according to the motorcycle manufacturer’s specification,

  8. verify free chain movement,

  9. check correct chain slack.

The chain must not bind or be forced out of its natural path after installation.

For motocross, enduro and other motorcycles

Chain guides are manufactured for a broad range of specific motorcycles.

Applications include:

The range also includes adventure motorcycles such as the Yamaha Ténéré 700.

Always verify exact fitment

The guide is not universal.

Individual motorcycles differ in:

  • chain size and type,

  • swingarm shape,

  • rear sprocket position,

  • mounting points,

  • guide construction.

Before ordering, always confirm:

  • manufacturer,

  • model,

  • model year,

  • specific motorcycle version where applicable.

The fitment table on the product page is the deciding reference.

Made in Italy

The chain guide is manufactured in Italy with an emphasis on accurate application-specific fit, durable construction and straightforward installation into the original mounting points.

A small component with an important job

The rear chain guide is easy to overlook until it becomes heavily worn. Yet on every ride it helps keep the chain correctly positioned and supports the operation of the complete final-drive system.

Regular inspection and timely replacement are simple ways to keep the chain drive in good condition and prevent an inexpensive wear component from contributing to unnecessary damage elsewhere.
