MOUSSE is a replacement for a conventional inner tube designed for off-road motorcycles. It is used mainly in motocross, enduro, hard enduro, rally and sidecar racing, where it eliminates the risk of a puncture caused by piercing or pinching the inner tube.

Unlike a conventional inner tube, it contains no air. Inside the tyre, the air is replaced by a flexible ring made from a special rubber compound, which supports the tyre even in demanding conditions.

MEFO MOUSSE is manufactured in several construction variants. They differ in cross-sectional shape, construction and intended use with different types of tyres. Choosing the correct product therefore depends not only on tyre size, but also on the tyre brand, specific model and intended use.

Professional installation, a sufficient amount of lubricating gel and correct storage are just as important as choosing the right product. All these factors affect both the riding characteristics and the service life of MEFO MOUSSE.

How does MEFO MOUSSE work?

Unlike a conventional inner tube, MEFO MOUSSE contains no air. Inside the tyre, the air is replaced by a flexible ring made from a special rubber compound, which fills the space between the rim and the tyre after installation.

When loaded, MEFO MOUSSE compresses and returns to its original shape when the load is removed. This supports the tyre and allows it to function correctly without a conventional inner tube.

The riding characteristics are determined not by air pressure, but by the construction of MEFO MOUSSE, the tyre used, the amount of lubricating gel, the operating temperature and the level of wear.

For this reason, the term pressure equivalent is often used with MEFO MOUSSE. It is not an actual pressure inside the tyre, but an approximate comparison of the riding characteristics with a tyre fitted with a conventional inner tube.

With standard MEFO MOUSSE variants, the riding characteristics cannot be changed by adjusting pressure. The final behaviour is determined by the correctly selected mousse type, its condition and the tyre used.

What pressure does MEFO MOUSSE correspond to?

One of the questions riders ask most often is what pressure MEFO MOUSSE corresponds to.

Because it contains no air, its pressure cannot be measured or adjusted in the same way as with a conventional inner tube. Manufacturers and riders therefore use the term pressure equivalent, which describes the approximate feel while riding.

For standard variants, the pressure equivalent is usually approximately 0.8 to 0.9 bar (12–13 psi).

However, the final riding characteristics are affected by several factors:

The same MEFO MOUSSE can therefore behave differently in different tyres. Each discipline and each tyre construction requires a different type of mousse. MEFO Sport therefore offers several construction ranges that differ in shape, firmness and intended use.

MEFO MOUSSE service life

MEFO MOUSSE must always be sufficiently lubricated. Only a properly lubricated mousse can move freely inside the tyre, generate less heat and retain its riding characteristics. A simple rule applies:

MEFO MOUSSE must always be as slippery as a snail.

Insufficient lubrication increases friction between the mousse and the tyre, accelerates heat build-up and can cause the material to crumble gradually, negatively affecting both its function and service life.

During every installation, we recommend checking the condition of the mousse, cleaning it and thoroughly relubricating it with original silicone-based MEFO Mousse Gel. It creates a protective lubricating film that reduces friction, limits heat build-up and helps the mousse retain its optimum properties throughout its use.

The greatest enemies of MEFO MOUSSE

The service life of MEFO MOUSSE is affected by several factors.

In particular:

With regular inspections and proper maintenance, MEFO MOUSSE can provide reliable service.

Storing MEFO MOUSSE

Each MEFO MOUSSE is supplied from the factory in its originalblack plastic bag with a cardboard insert, placed inside a sturdy cardboard box. This packaging is intended not only for transport, but also for correct mousse storage. The manufacturer recommends keeping the mousse in the complete original packaging at a constant temperature of up to 30 °C, in a cool and dark place. The cardboard insert helps maintain the correct shape of the mousse and limits deformation during long-term storage.

Avoid prolonged exposure to:

After removing MEFO MOUSSE from the tyre, we recommend cleaning it thoroughly, relubricating it with original MEFO Mousse Gel and storing it in the original plastic bag with the cardboard insert. When stored in a cool, dark place at a constant temperature of up to 30 °C, the mousse retains its shape, flexibility and riding characteristics better over the long term.

Installation and lubrication of MEFO MOUSSE

Lubricating gel is an essential part of every MEFO MOUSSE installation. Its purpose is not only to make installation easier, but above all to reduce friction between the tyre and the mousse while riding. This limits heat generation and helps extend the service life of the mousse. The lubricating gel must be applied evenly over the entire surface of MEFO MOUSSE. No dry areas may remain, as these would cause increased friction while riding.

From the experience of MEFO.cz

We put it simply. MEFO MOUSSE must be as slippery as a snail.

If the surface of the mousse is dry or lubricating gel has been applied to only part of its surface, the lubrication is insufficient.

Correct installation has a fundamental effect on the function and service life of MEFO MOUSSE. Before installation, we recommend checking the condition of the rim, the rim tape covering the spoke nipples and the inside of the tyre. Apply a sufficient amount of lubricating gel to the entire surface of the mousse. After inserting the mousse into the tyre, make sure that the tyre beads are correctly seated around the entire circumference of the rim. Once installation is complete, check that the tyre is seated evenly on the rim.

It offers the same advantages as models for adult motorcycles: it eliminates the risk of punctures, requires no inflation and provides stable riding characteristics during both training and racing. Available for 10" and 12" tyres on 50 cc motorcycles.

How to choose MEFO MOUSSE

The correct front or rear tyre size is the starting point. The size is stated on the tyre sidewall, and MEFO MOUSSE must always correspond to the size of the tyre being used.

Size is only the first piece of information. The tyre brand and specific model are equally important.

Tyres of the same size can have different carcass constructions, internal volumes or shapes. The same MEFO MOUSSE may therefore not be suitable for all of them.

For example, a Dunlop Geomax MX34 tyre in size 110/90-19 uses a different MEFO MOUSSE from a Rinaldi SR39 in the same 110/90-19 size.

When ordering, we therefore recommend stating not only the tyre size, but also its brand and model.

The way in which the motorcycle is used also plays an important role.

MEFO also offers special mousse ranges for rally, adventure motorcycles and large enduro motorcycles. These models are designed for demanding off-road use and normal short road transfers between individual sections of a route. Like other mousse products, however, they are not designed for prolonged riding on asphalt. The manufacturer recommends not exceeding 130 km/h and minimising riding on paved roads.

The most common selection mistakes

Most problems can be prevented by choosing the correct product and installing it properly. In practice, we most often encounter the following mistakes.

Choosing solely by size

The same tyre size does not necessarily mean the same MEFO MOUSSE.

The tyre brand and model are also decisive.

Using a worn mousse in a new tyre

A worn MEFO MOUSSE gradually loses both volume and flexibility.

In a new tyre, it may no longer provide the same support as a new mousse.

Insufficient lubrication

Lubricating gel reduces friction between the tyre and MEFO MOUSSE.

An insufficient amount leads to increased heat build-up and faster mousse wear.

Incorrect installation

It is important to use suitable installation tools and the correct procedure.

Incorrect installation can damage the tyre, rim or the mousse itself.

Incorrect storage

Long-term storage in direct sunlight or near heat sources can negatively affect the properties of the rubber compound.

Why we offer so many types of MEFO MOUSSE

There is no single mousse that is ideal for every motorcycle, tyre and riding style. MEFO Sport has therefore developed several construction ranges that differ in shape, firmness and intended use. This allows you to choose a mousse specifically for the motorcycle type, tyre construction and intended use – from children's motorcycles through motocross and hard enduro to rally and large adventure enduro motorcycles.

FAQ

What should I do if MEFO MOUSSE shrinks over time?

MEFO MOUSSE wears naturally during use. Its volume may gradually decrease, which is reflected in changes to the riding characteristics.

If MEFO MOUSSE is otherwise in good condition, it can be modified in some cases. The mousse is cut and supplemented with a section from another mousse, restoring its volume.

However, a MEFO MOUSSE modified in this way will generally have a shorter service life than a new one.

In the event of significant wear or mechanical damage, we recommend replacing it with a new MEFO MOUSSE.

Can I use one MEFO MOUSSE in different tyres?

Not always.

Even tyres of the same size may require a different type of MEFO MOUSSE.

Is it necessary to use lubricating gel?

Yes.

Lubricating gel is important for the correct function and service life of MEFO MOUSSE.

Can the pressure be changed as with a conventional inner tube?

Not with standard MEFO MOUSSE variants.

The exception is the MEFO MOUSSE TCS system, which allows pressure adjustment using a special inner tube.

How do I know when it is time for replacement?

If MEFO MOUSSE loses volume or flexibility, or no longer provides sufficient tyre support, we recommend replacing it.
