WHY WAS MEFO MOUSSE CREATED? WHEN DETAILS DECIDE THE OUTCOME

A punctured inner tube can end a race, an enduro competition or a long-planned ride within seconds. One sharp stone, root or hard impact is enough, and instead of continuing, the rider has to replace the tube. In motocross, a puncture means losing valuable positions; in enduro or rally, it can mean the end of the entire race.

This is why the mousse system was developed. It replaces the conventional inner tube with a resilient insert inside the tyre. Because it contains no air, it cannot be punctured and there is no risk of a sudden loss of pressure. The rider can therefore focus on riding rather than the risk of a puncture.

From tyres to our own mousse

MEFO Sport has been developing products for off-road motorcycles since 1977. Decades of experience with tyres and cooperation with racing riders led to the development of its own MEFO MOUSSE in 2006.

The aim was not to create a universal inner-tube replacement, but a mousse that would provide reliability, a long service life and, above all, predictable handling in motocross, enduro, hard enduro and rally.

KNOW-HOW INSIDE

MEFO MOUSSE is developed, tested and manufactured at MEFO Sport's own production facility in Germany. This gives the manufacturer control over the entire process – from development to final production.

The mousse compound and manufacturing processes have long been closely guarded company know-how. The basis is a special resilient rubber material designed to withstand the high mechanical and thermal loads encountered during off-road riding.

NOT ALL MOUSSES ARE THE SAME

Many riders assume that selecting the correct wheel diameter is enough. In reality, tyres of the same size can differ significantly in width, profile and carcass construction.

MEFO Sport therefore develops mousse not only according to rim size, but also for the specific tyre and its intended use. The aim is for the mousse and tyre to form a single functional unit, providing optimum support, damping and grip.

A typical example is the rear wheel of 85 cc motocross motorcycles. MEFO offers three different 16" mousse variants for the rear wheel of 85 cc motocross motorcycles. Each is designed for a different tyre construction so that, once fitted, it provides optimum support, damping and handling.

This individual approach to the design of each model is one of the reasons why MEFO products have earned the trust of riders around the world.

THE NEW GENERATION OF MEFO MOUSSE GROOVE

Experience from motocross, hard enduro and long-distance rallies led to the development of the new generation of MEFO MOUSSE Groove.

The new Bead & Groove system uses specially shaped grooves that allow the mousse to deform more naturally under load. This helps the tyre follow the terrain more closely, provides more precise feedback and improves suspension performance during compression and rebound.

The grooved design also reduces unsprung mass and helps distribute the mousse gel more evenly inside the tyre. The result is a lower operating temperature under sustained load, a longer mousse service life and more stable handling in demanding conditions.

The main benefits of the Groove system include:

  • improved tyre grip,
  • greater lateral support,
  • lower weight,
  • improved bump absorption,
  • less heat build-up under sustained load,
  • longer mousse service life.

CORRECT USE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS CORRECT SELECTION

Every mousse flexes while riding. Continuous compression and release generate heat, which is a natural part of how it works.

Mousse inserts are therefore designed for a maximum speed of 130 km/h. Prolonged riding at higher speeds or long road sections can cause excessive heat build-up, shortening the life of the mousse.

Quality silicone-based mousse gel is also an essential part of installation. It reduces friction between the tyre and the mousse, limits heat build-up and contributes to the long service life of the entire system.
