How to properly care for motocross boots

How to properly care for motocross boots – so they last you years, not just one season

Why bother with cleaning and maintenance at all?
  • Leather and synthetic materials quickly harden and crack
  • Plastic buckles break
  • A damp interior will start to mold and smell
  • Damaged or peeling soles = loss of control and risk of serious injury
In short: neglected boots will betray you one day. And at the worst possible moment.

Step by step: How to clean boots after every ride (it really only takes a moment)

1. **Let the mud dry a bit**
Let it harden for 20-30 minutes – then it will go down much better.

2. ** Use a brush for coarse dirt
Take a soft brush and brush off all large dirt

3. **Wash with a weak stream of water**
Garden hose on the lowest pressure or shower with lukewarm water. Never use a strong jet – you could damage the glued joints or push water inside.

4. **Detailed cleaning with soapy water**
A bucket of lukewarm water + a little bit of spring water or a special cleaner for motorcycle gear. A soft cloth or a soft brush and go through:
  • all the seams (that's where mud sticks the most)
  • the area around the buckles
  • the sole – take out all the stones and check if there are any that are coming loose
5. **The inside of the shoe – the most important thing!**
Never put shoes in the washing machine. Never.
  • Remove the insoles (if applicable) and clean them separately by hand
  • Wipe the inside with a slightly damp cloth with a little soap
For odor:
  • antibacterial shoe spray (works great)
  • or an ozone cleaner if you're the high-tech type
### Proper drying is half the battle
The worst thing you can do is put wet shoes in a heater or in direct sunlight. The material will crack and harden.
Ideally:
  • Open the shoes as wide as possible (all buckles open)
  • Insert newspapers or a special shoe dryer
  • Let them dry freely at room temperature, ideally with air flow (like a fan)
In 24-48 hours, the shoes will be as good as new.
