The first warmer days, dry roads and the desire to finally get going again. But that's exactly when many motorbikes are left sitting in the garage with a dead battery, soft tyres or brakes that don't work as they should. All you need to do is give your motorbike a little time before the first ride and the whole season can start without stress and breakdowns.
Before you turn the key, go through this basic motorbike maintenance checklist before the start of the new season:
  1. Check the battery and electrical installation
  2. Check the oil and operating fluids
  3. Check the condition of the tyres and pressure
  4. Check the brakes and braking system
  5. Clean and lubricate the chain
  6. Check the air filter
  7. Wash the motorbike and visually inspect
  8. Caution during the first ride after winter
Let's look at the individual points in more detail.

1. BATTERY AND ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AS THE MOST COMMON SPRING PROBLEM
Undoubtedly the most common reason why a motorcycle won't start in the spring is a discharged battery. Even if it has been standing still over the winter, the electronics consume a small amount of energy and the capacity gradually decreases. The battery can therefore be weak or completely dead after the winter if it has not been recharged regularly.
Therefore, check the voltage before the season. A fully charged battery should have approximately 12.6–12.8 V. Anything significantly below this value means that it needs to be recharged or replaced. At the same time, check the terminals. Oxidation or loose contacts can make starting quite difficult.
This step should also include a basic technical inspection of the motorcycle from the perspective of the electrical installation, i.e. checking the lights, indicators, brake light and horn.

2. OIL AND OPERATING FLUIDS AS THE BASIS OF EVERY MOTORCYCLE SERVICE
Engine oil is the lifeblood of a motorcycle. If you changed the oil before winter and the mileage was low, there is usually no reason to panic. However, if the oil in the engine is from last season and you have driven thousands of kilometers, a change is necessary.
Check the oil level according to the manual and also look at its color and consistency. Black, thick oil without shine means that it has already served its time. It is worth changing the oil filter along with the oil. It is not expensive and has a great impact on the life of the engine.
Don't forget about the brake fluid and coolant. Brake fluid should be clear to slightly amber. If it is dark, it should be discarded. Coolant must not be cloudy or brown.

3. TIRES
Even if the motorcycle itself may be technically perfect, bad tires usually turn it into a dangerous machine. After winter, motorcycle tires are underinflated and sometimes slightly hardened.
In this step, it is up to you to check the tire pressure of your motorcycle according to the manufacturer's values, ideally on cold tires. Underinflated tires impair handling, overinflated tires reduce grip. Both options are wrong and the tire pressure needs to be adjusted correctly.
Also look at the tread depth and the overall condition of the rubber. Cracks, bulges or significant flats from standing are a clear signal for replacement. Motorcycle maintenance in this area really has a big impact on your safety.

4. BRAKES
The brakes on your motorcycle must work 100% right from the first ride. Therefore, check the thickness of the brake pads, the condition of the discs and the level of brake fluidIf the fluid is more than two years old, replacing it is a sensible step. Old fluid loses its effectiveness and the brakes can fade under heavy load.
As part of your motorcycle's service, it is also worth visually checking the hoses and connections to see if there are any fluid leaks.

5. CHAIN ??AND SECONDARY GEAR - WHO OILS, WHO DRIVES
The chainshould be clean, properly tensioned and lubricated. After winter, it is often dry or contaminated with old grease and dust. Therefore, first clean it with a suitable cleaner, let it dry and then lubricate it with a product specifically designed for motorcycle chains.
Also check the chain slack, which should usually be around 30–50 mm depending on the type of motorcycle. Incorrect tension destroys the sprocket, pinion and the chain itself.

6. AIR FILTER
A clogged air filter limits the air supply to the engine, increases consumption and reduces performance. After winter, it is worth checking, cleaning or replacing the filter. For off-road motorcycles and scooters, this part of motorcycle service is often underestimated, yet it has a fundamental impact on the operation of the engine.

7. MOTORCYCLE WASHING AND VISUAL INSPECTION
Spring washing is not just about appearance. On a clean motorcycle, you will notice loose screws, cracks, leaks or damaged hoses much more easily. Use gentle products specifically designed for motorcycles and avoid high-pressure cleaners near bearings and electronics.

8. FIRST RIDE: WITH CALM AND SENSE
Even if the motorcycle's technical inspection is complete, take the first kilometers of riding with caution. The tires need to warm up, the brakes need to "settle in" and the rider needs to regain feeling. After winter, there is often gravel, dust and leftover grit on the roads, so caution is really in order.
MEFO.cz recommends and advises:
  • We do not service motorcycles at MEFO, but we offer a lot of gadgets that will make your motorcycle ride more enjoyable.
  • Acerbis offers durable engine covers (available for the Honda Transalp or Yamaha Ténéré, for example) as well as frame covers that will reliably protect your bike from scuffs from boots.
  • A great feature are the chain guides with a replaceable slider, which we have for some road and off-road models. The lower part of the guide most often wears out, with our solution you can simply unscrew it and replace it.
