Junior body armour for motocross and enduro

The Acerbis Specktrum Kid is junior upper-body armour designed for motocross, enduro and other forms of off-road riding. Its connected protection system covers the chest, back, shoulders, elbows and rib area, removing the need for young riders to put on and adjust several separate protectors.

The construction combines rigid plastic panels, soft biofoam and flexible perforated sleeves. The chest and back sections provide Level 2 protection, while the shoulders and elbows meet Level 1 requirements. Open sides and ventilated protective components help reduce heat build-up during physically demanding riding.

Level 2 chest protection

The front section consists of shaped plastic panels mounted on soft biofoam. The firmer external layer helps distribute direct impact energy across a larger surface, while the soft base absorbs transmitted force and separates the plastic components from the rider’s body.

The individual panels follow the torso of a young rider and, when the correct size is selected, remain positioned over the chest while leaning forward, controlling the handlebars and changing position on the motorcycle.

The chest protector complies with EN 1621-3:2018, Level 2. This is the higher of the two protection levels defined by the standard for motorcycle chest impact protectors.

Level 2 back protection

The back protector combines segmented plastic panels with a soft foam layer. Its construction follows the curvature of the back and allows the young rider to lean forward, rotate the torso and switch between seated and standing positions.

The firmer external components provide a barrier against direct contact with the motorcycle, stones and surrounding terrain. The soft backing improves comfort and helps keep the protector close to the body.

The back section complies with EN 1621-2:2014, Level 2. Correct function depends on selecting the appropriate size and keeping the protector positioned along the back while riding.

Level 1 shoulder and elbow protection

Extended soft-material inserts protect the shoulders and elbows. Their flexible construction follows joint movement and creates less bulk around the arms than extensive rigid shells.

The protective components are positioned inside close-fitting sleeves made from perforated stretch fabric. The fabric helps keep the protectors over the shoulders and elbows while bending the arms, raising the elbows and controlling the handlebars.

The shoulder and elbow protectors comply with EN 1621-1:2012, Level 1. Before every ride, check that the inserts have not moved away from the corresponding joints.

Semi-rigid rib protection

Semi-rigid rib protectors extend coverage around the sides of the torso. They help shield the rider against flying stones, dirt and other debris in the area between the front and rear panels.

The side components comply with EN 14021:2003 for stone-shield protection. This approval is not equivalent to Level 1 or Level 2 impact certification under the EN 1621 series.

The side sections should therefore not be described as certified hip protectors. Their main function is to extend rib and side coverage against material thrown up by motorcycle wheels.

Rigid panels mounted on soft biofoam

The plastic panels are attached to a soft biofoam base. This combination provides the stability of a firmer external layer with more comfortable contact against the rider’s body.

The biofoam helps distribute pressure, reduces direct contact between hard plastic edges and the rider and allows the protective components to follow the shape of the torso more naturally.

Segmented panels support flexibility, allowing the armour to adapt partially to forward lean and body movement while maintaining the required chest and back coverage.

Ventilated structure of the plastic components

The plastic sections use an open structure with ventilation openings. This reduces unnecessary material, supports airflow and retains the rigidity required for the protective function.

Air can pass through the front and rear sections towards the body. Ventilation is beneficial during longer motocross sessions, technical enduro and warm-weather riding.

The construction cannot prevent perspiration, but it helps reduce heat accumulation beneath the rigid protective components.

Perforated stretch sleeves

The shoulder and elbow protectors are held inside perforated stretch-fabric sleeves. The flexible material adapts to the circumference of the arms and moves together with the young rider.

Perforations encourage airflow around the arms and help release excess heat. The close fit also stabilises the protective inserts without requiring several individual straps around the arms.

The sleeves must not be excessively loose, as the protectors could move during a fall. At the same time, they must not restrict circulation or natural elbow movement.

Padded shoulder connection

The sleeves are connected to the main armour using padded shoulder straps. This arrangement connects the arm protection to the chest and back sections while leaving the sides largely free from continuous fabric.

Padding distributes pressure across the shoulders and improves comfort during longer use. The flexible connection also allows the arms to move independently from the torso.

Open sides supporting airflow

There are no large textile panels between the chest and back components. Open sides leave much of the torso unrestricted and allow continuous air exchange.

This design combines the coverage of body armour with the ventilation associated with a simpler motocross chest protector. The young rider receives shoulder and elbow protection without a complete mesh jacket surrounding the torso.

The open construction is particularly useful during physically demanding riding, when heat can quickly accumulate underneath protective equipment.

Neck-brace accommodation

Selected parts of the front and rear protection can be removed to create space for a suitable neck brace. This adjustment allows the two protective systems to sit together more effectively.

The helmet, body armour and children’s neck protector should be tried on together. The individual components must not push against one another or restrict normal head rotation, flexion and extension.

Removable components should only be adjusted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Parts not intended for this configuration must not be removed.

Adjustable fit

Elastic side straps allow the circumference to be adapted to the child’s body. The adjustment brings the chest and back sections closer to the torso and limits unwanted movement while riding.

An elastic waist adjustment stabilises the lower part of the back protector. The armour should fit closely without restricting breathing, movement or causing uncomfortable pressure.

Before every ride, check that the chest panel covers the centre of the chest, the rear section follows the spinal area and the shoulder and elbow inserts remain over the corresponding joints.

Sizes for riders 125 to 160 cm tall

The Acerbis Specktrum Kid is available in S/M and L/XL. The manufacturer recommends it for young riders approximately 125 to 160 cm tall.

Height is only a general guide. Torso circumference, arm length and the actual position of every protective component must also be considered.

Armour that is too large may move during a fall, while a size that is too small can restrict breathing and movement. The child should therefore try the protector on together with the jersey and other equipment being used.
