Lightweight chest and back protector for motocross and enduro
The Acerbis P035 L1 is a lightweight, compact chest and back protector designed for motocross, enduro and other forms of off-road riding. It combines rigid ventilated panels with soft EVA padding that helps absorb impact energy while improving comfort against the rider’s body.
Both the chest and back sections provide certified Level 1 protection. Its low-profile construction, open sides and adjustable straps reduce unnecessary bulk and maintain freedom of movement when riding seated, standing on the footpegs or actively controlling the motorcycle.

Certified Level 1 chest protection
The front section uses a rigid plastic panel combined with soft EVA padding. The hard layer helps distribute direct impact force across a larger surface, while the foam absorbs transferred energy and separates the rigid shell from the rider’s body.
The chest protector complies with EN 1621-3:2018, Level 1. This standard applies to motorcycle chest impact protection and evaluates the amount of force transmitted through the protector during specified laboratory testing.
Unlike a basic roost deflector intended primarily for flying stones and debris, the P035 L1 provides certified chest impact protection.
Certified Level 1 back protection
The rear section combines a rigid ventilated panel with a soft protective layer. It covers a substantial area of the back and helps protect it during falls, impacts and contact with the surrounding terrain.
The back protector complies with EN 1621-2:2014, Level 1. Certification confirms that the protective component has passed impact-energy absorption testing.
The P035 L1 therefore provides certified protection for both the front and rear of the torso in one compact unit.
Rigid panels with soft biofoam
The protective panels are mounted on a soft biofoam and EVA base. This construction combines a firmer external barrier with a softer contact layer that follows the shape of the rider’s body.
The foam helps distribute pressure and reduces direct contact between the plastic sections and the chest or back. This improves comfort during longer use and allows the protector to adapt more naturally as the rider changes position.
The segmented panels also provide a degree of flexibility as the torso moves.
Extensive ventilation
The plastic panels contain numerous ventilation openings. Perforated foam underneath allows air to continue flowing towards the rider’s body.
This open construction helps reduce heat build-up between the rider, protector and jersey during longer motocross sessions, slow technical enduro riding and warm-weather use.
Open sides also leave a large proportion of the torso unrestricted. Compared with a complete armoured jacket, the P035 L1 therefore places less material around the body.
Removable internal padding
The ventilated internal padding can be removed. This makes the protector easier to maintain and allows its individual components to be cleaned separately according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.
The removable construction also provides access to the ventilation openings and makes it easier to inspect the foam and plastic components. After a significant fall, check the protector for cracks, deformation or other damage.
All cleaned components must be completely dry and correctly repositioned before the next use.
Option to remove the rigid rear panel
The rear section can also be configured without the external plastic panel, leaving the soft protective component in place. This reduces bulk and allows greater flexibility across the back.
The rigid panel, however, provides an additional barrier against direct contact with stones, branches and the surrounding terrain. The selected configuration should therefore suit the riding conditions and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Before riding, always check that every component in use is correctly secured and that the protective section remains properly positioned.
Freedom of movement while riding
The P035 L1 does not include integrated shoulder or elbow protectors. The shoulders and arms therefore remain unrestricted for natural handlebar control, weight transfer and changes of riding position.
Its compact construction does not unnecessarily interfere when leaning over the handlebars or switching between seated and standing positions. Depending on the riding equipment, the protector can be worn underneath or over a motocross jersey.
Separate certified shoulder and elbow protectors can be added when additional coverage is required.
Adjustable fit
The height of the front and rear sections can be adjusted using hook-and-loop shoulder straps. This helps position the front panel over the centre of the chest and align the rear section correctly along the back.
Elastic side straps allow the circumference to be adapted to the rider’s body and clothing layers. Their flexibility also allows the construction to follow chest movement during breathing.
A correctly adjusted protector should remain close to the body without moving significantly when the rider leans forward or controls the handlebars. The straps must not restrict breathing or normal upper-body movement.
Quick plastic-hook closure
The elastic side straps fasten using plastic hooks. Once the strap length has been set, the protector can be put on and removed quickly without readjusting the entire system before every ride.
The simple side closure is also convenient when wearing gloves or changing equipment beside the motorcycle.
P035 L1 and competition requirements
The P035 L1 is not merely a stone shield. Its chest and back sections provide homologated Level 1 impact protection under the relevant EN 1621 standards.
However, equipment requirements can vary depending on the discipline, national federation, racing series and organiser. Riders should check whether the event regulations accept Level 1 protection or require a higher level.
For riders seeking Level 2 chest and back protection, the Acerbis P035 Race is an alternative.
The differences between standards and protection levels are explained in the protector certification overview.
