Why use genuine MEFO mounting gel?
Correct mousse installation involves more than simply placing the foam insert inside the tyre. To support reliable performance and reduce premature wear, the entire surface of the MEFO MOUSSE should be thoroughly and evenly coated with genuine MEFO mounting gel before installation.
The mounting gel creates a lubricating layer between the mousse and the inner surface of the tyre. During riding, the mousse is constantly compressed and deformed inside the tyre. Without sufficient lubrication, increased friction develops between the two surfaces, generating heat and placing additional stress on the material.
Less friction and less heat
One of the main functions of mounting gel is to reduce friction between the mousse and the tyre. This becomes particularly important during longer or more demanding riding, when the complete system is repeatedly compressed, heated and allowed to recover.
A correctly applied layer of gel allows the surfaces to move more freely against one another as the mousse deforms. This helps limit local heat build-up that could otherwise accelerate wear and affect the properties of the mousse.
Even application is essential
Applying gel to only a few areas is not enough. Before installation, the complete mousse surface should be covered with a continuous and sufficient layer.
Dry or insufficiently lubricated sections are exposed to increased friction and thermal stress. These areas can therefore begin to wear more quickly than the rest of the mousse.
Spread the gel carefully around the complete circumference and width of the mousse and check that no significant dry areas remain.
Helping extend MEFO MOUSSE service life
Mousse service life is influenced by many factors, including motorcycle type, rider weight, speed, terrain, temperature, loading, riding style and storage conditions. Correct installation and lubrication also play an important role.
A sufficient amount of mounting gel helps the mousse operate with lower friction and reduced thermal stress. Regular inspection and correct lubrication can therefore contribute to a longer usable life.
Mounting gel cannot prevent the natural ageing and wear of the material. A mousse is a consumable product and its characteristics gradually change through use.
Why use genuine MEFO gel?
Genuine MEFO mounting gel is intended specifically for use with MEFO MOUSSE. There is therefore no need to experiment with general-purpose lubricants, oils, greases or other substances whose composition may not be suitable for the mousse material.
Using the intended mounting gel provides lubrication designed for the MEFO MOUSSE system.
Other lubricants may have different friction characteristics, may dry too quickly or may not be compatible with the mousse and tyre materials.
When should the gel be used?
Use mounting gel:
when installing a new MEFO MOUSSE,
whenever a used mousse is reinstalled,
when changing the tyre,
during regular mousse inspection and servicing,
whenever the existing layer of gel is insufficient or has dried out.
A mousse should not be operated dry.
How much gel should be used?
Even coverage is more important than placing a thick quantity in only one area. Apply the gel around the complete circumference and spread it thoroughly over the sides so that a lubricating layer is present between the mousse and the inner tyre surface.
The required amount depends on the dimensions of the mousse and tyre. The objective is a continuous lubricating layer without dry areas.
During servicing, inspect the remaining lubrication and add gel where necessary.
Important points during installation
Before installing the mousse:
inspect the condition of the mousse,
inspect the inside of the tyre,
remove dirt and foreign objects,
distribute the gel evenly over the complete mousse,
include the side surfaces,
avoid unnecessarily wiping the gel away during installation,
check that the tyre is correctly seated on the rim afterwards.
Correct installation has a major influence on how the complete system subsequently performs.
Gel does not replace correct use
Even a sufficient amount of mounting gel cannot compensate for an incorrectly sized mousse, extreme overheating or prolonged use of an insert that is already heavily worn.
Correct operation requires a combination of:
the correct mousse size,
a compatible tyre,
correct installation,
sufficient mounting gel,
regular inspection,
appropriate use and storage.
