BROKEN CHAIN, WHEN AND HOW TO REPLACE THE CHAIN
You don't want a broken chain. When and how to replace a chain | MEFOProper maintenance and replacement of the chain on a motorcycle is important, when the chain needs to be replaced, how to recognize the correct tension. Timely replacement of the chain can save you from further considerable expenses for damage to the motorcycle. In this article we will try to carry out maintenance and replacement of the chain.

- Chains for motocross and enduro motorcycles do not have any specific maintenance and lubrication period. In general, we keep the chain clean, the best way to remove mud deposits is to use pressurized water and a chain brush, then remove the remaining water from the chain, just turn the rear wheel several times. For more complete cleaning, you can use a spray chain cleaner.
- Chains for road motorcycles are not as dirty as for off-road motorcycles, they are usually just dusty, so we use spray chain cleaners to clean these chains.
After cleaning the chain, the chain is lubricated. For off-road motorcycles, we use non-sticky lubricant, while for touring motorcycles, we use white lubricant.

First, we remove the old chain
- we find the chain splitter, which we place ideally on the upper part of the rosette, so that it is easily accessible
- to make the work easier, secure the rear wheel so that it does not move
- using a combination wrench or a flat screwdriver, we remove the splitter
- then we can remove the chain - pull it out
- we check the guides, replace the damaged ones
- we check the wear of the teeth on the front wheel and rosette, these are consumable parts of the motorcycle, worn guides, wheels and rosette will shorten the life of the chain.
- If we do not buy the chain by the meter, the new chain is a few links longer, it is universal for various gears.
- We wind the new chain onto the wheel and the rosette, if it is the right length, we connect it with a coupling
- If the chain is longer, we shorten it ideally with a chain splitter, if we don't have one we can use a "flex" and cut off the excess chain links.
- Using the tensioning screws, we move the rear wheel so that the chain is properly tensioned to the sag value specified by the motorcycle manufacturer. (It is necessary to set the same value on both tensioning screws)
- to adjust the chain tension, it is necessary to have the motorcycle on a stand so that the wheels do not touch the ground
- after tensioning the chain, tighten the rear wheel nut with a wrench, check the tightness of the nut on the chain adjustment screws
- after several rides, it is necessary to check the chain tension, a new chain tends to pull out
In conclusion
