If you are around motorbikes, off-road riding or enduro, you have probably come across several names for the same thing. We have lever protectors, but some people refer to them as motorbike lever covers, others as basters, others as blasters or even blasters. And so there is confusion in these terms. In the article you will find an explanation of which of these terms is correct, but also what these parts are actually used for and when it makes sense to install them on a motorbike.

DIFFERENT NAMES, SAME MEANING
From a practical point of view, the terms lever guards, motorcycle lever covers or motorcycle busters refer to one and the same type of accessory. They are protective elements mounted on the handlebars that protect the rider's hands and the motorcycle's control levers.

The difference between the individual names is primarily linguistic. The correct name, which is based on the original English name, is bástry. The terms blasters or błastry are widespread but linguistically inaccurate distortions that have historically taken hold in the Czech environment and are still commonly used today. In practice, however, everyone is talking about the same thing - motorcycle lever protectors.

Interesting fact: In the Czech motorcycling environment, distorted names have been around for years, which is why you will also encounter them in official descriptions or product names, even if they are not linguistically correct.

WHAT ARE LEVER GUARDS FOR
The main purpose of lever guards is protection, on several levels. In the off-road, they protect the hands from branches, stones, mud or gravel that could otherwise hit the rider unpleasantly. They also serve as protection for the clutch and brake levers themselves in the event of a motorcycle crash, because a broken or bent lever can end a ride or race sooner than the rider would like.
For road or touring riding, the importance of lever guards shifts slightly. They function more as protection against wind, rain and cold or as an accessory that increases comfort during longer journeys. However, they can still prevent damage to the levers in the event of a crash, saving the rider time and money.

LEVER PROTECTORS ACCORDING TO THE STYLE OF RIDING AND THE TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE
Lever protectors are a typical accessory especially for enduro, motocross and adventure motorcycles, because in these disciplines the risk of falling or contact with the terrain is significantly higher and the protection of the levers and hands becomes more important. In such a situation, you will most often use stronger variants with aluminum reinforcement, which can absorb larger impacts.

On the other hand, you can more often encounter plastic lever guards, which have as their main goal to ensure comfort and basic protection, on touring enduro and road motorcycles. The riding style and the environment in which the motorcycle is most often moved are the main factors for choosing a specific type.

Motorcycle lever protectors can be found today for most commonly used types of handlebars. It is always important to address compatibility with a specific handlebar diameter, type of throttle grip and controls. Some systems are universal, others are designed specifically for specific types of motorcycles or applications.

Special attention should be paid to the installation of motorcycles with original handlebar weights or heated grips. This is where you may need to choose a suitable installation kit or a specific solution.

Tip: If you ride a combination of road and light terrain, it is worth choosing a compromise solution, namely lever protectors with a stronger construction, but at the same time with a sufficiently large plastic surface for wind protection.

BRANDED PROTECTORS AS A FUNCTIONAL SECURITY
There are a number of manufacturers on the market who specialize in lever protectors.Acerbis lever protectors, for example, are very popular, which are based on the manufacturer's many years of experience with off-road. Acerbis blasters are among the most common choices of riders looking for reliable protection of levers and hands in demanding conditions. These products emphasize not only durability, but also ergonomics, correct shaping and compatibility with common types of motorcycles. The situation is similar with other brands, where it is important to monitor the quality of materials and the method of attachment.

MEFO.CZ RECOMMENDS AND ADVICE:
  • The Acerbis brand has been producing lever protectors since the beginning of its existence and is one of the proven manufacturers in this segment.
  • The e-shop also offers lever protectors for small 50 ccm racers, so that even children can ride with equipment that matches that of adult riders. Little pilots often don't just want functional protection, they also want to look "like big racers".
  • In colder weather, lever protectors will also be appreciated by motocross riders who don't normally use them, because they help limit the flow of cold air on their hands. A simple rule applies here: the less the protectors are ventilated, the better they protect against cold and wind.

SUMMARY
Whether you use the terms basters, blasters or lever protectors, the most important thing is that the selected product matches your riding style and type of motorcycle. Properly selected lever covers can significantly increase comfort and safety and often save a lot of worries in the field. The name is secondary in this case. Function, compatibility and build quality are what matter in practice.
