The entire motorcycle needs maintenance, including the brakes. In addition to monitoring the good condition of the brake pads and brake discs, it is also necessary to monitor the brake fluid regularly.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid is hydroscopic, which means that it loses its performance over time because it absorbs water and has undergone several thermal cycles. Changing brake fluid depends on many factors, and for off-road motorcycles, it should be changed more often than once a year.

Replacing brake fluid
The replacement itself is not entirely simple, so if you are not confident, it is better to entrust this task to professionals.
Simply flushing the brake hoses is not enough, as is done with a regular bleed. All the old fluid remains on the back of the caliper, where it is most heated and stressed in the entire system.

To completely replace the brake fluid, you need to disassemble the caliper, remove all pistons and seals. Clean everything, be careful not to use lubricant to install the caliper, it reacts with the brake fluid and can cause a number of problems. Use brake fluid of the same designation as the previous one - i.e. DOT4 or DOT5.1, these two brake fluids are compatible with each other.

What is needed?
  • new brake fluid
  • hose and container for old fluid
  • key for bleeder screws
  • rag and gloves (brake fluid is aggressive)

Brake caliper

When braking, the brake pads wear out, releasing dust that settles inside the caliper, this dust sticks the caliper seal to the piston and the brake lever stroke increases. Every time you remove a wheel or caliper, it is a good idea to press the brake lever several times and the pistons are briefly pressed into the caliper.

Brake pads

The brake pads do not like the friction material, move both pads to one side and press on their back. Do not forget to check the brake pad pins. Worn pads damage the brake disc.

Bleeding the brake system

The task is to remove all air from the entire system. Air in the brake system reduces braking effects.

Changing the brake fluid

Caution: brake fluid is highly corrosive to painted surfaces and can also contaminate brake pads. Therefore, work very carefully so as not to spill any brake fluid. Use a syringe or rag to remove the old fluid. Bleeding any system takes time and patience, and a mini bleeder attached to the bleed screw on a motorcycle makes the job easier. Squeeze the brake lever several times, hold it to maintain pressure, release the bleed screw, and fluid will begin to flow out. Once the flow slows down, close the screw and squeeze the brake lever, repeating the process several times until new fluid starts flowing. Be careful not to suck air into the system.

Take a break, tap the brake caliper, bend the hoses to release bubbles, bleed the screw, remember to fill the brake cylinder to the "FULL" mark, never overfill. Because if the fluid has nowhere to expand when it heats up, the brakes will lock up.
