Junior soft knee guards for motocross, enduro and mountain biking

The Acerbis Soft Knee Guard Kid are lightweight and flexible junior knee protectors designed for motocross, enduro, mountain biking and other activities involving a risk of falling or striking the legs. Their soft protective construction covers the knee and upper shin while following the young rider’s movement without using a bulky rigid plastic shell.

An anatomically curved shape helps keep the protective insert positioned over the knee joint while riding seated, standing on the footpegs, walking or pedalling. Durable perforated technical fabric supports airflow, while soft padding around vulnerable parts of the knee improves comfort during longer use.

Adjustable retaining straps and silicone grip elements support a stable fit. The protectors are supplied as a pair in one adjustable junior size and comply with EN 1621-1:2012.

Soft knee and upper-shin coverage

The main protective insert covers the front of the knee joint and continues over the upper section of the shin. Its extended shape provides broader coverage than a separate basic knee cup.

The guards help reduce the effects of direct contact with stones, branches, the motorcycle frame, bicycle components and the track surface. Their soft construction avoids creating a rigid shell around the knee that could interfere with deeper leg flexion.

The protective insert helps absorb and distribute part of the energy created during an impact. Performance depends on correct positioning, suitable adjustment and every component remaining undamaged.

No protector can prevent every injury. For motocross and enduro, the knee guards should be combined with appropriate motocross boots, trousers, a helmet and other protective equipment.

Flexible protective insert

The soft polyurethane protective material remains pliable during normal movement and adapts to the curved shape of the knee. The child can therefore flex the legs naturally while riding, walking, mounting the motorcycle or pedalling.

This flexible construction is suitable for young riders who need joint protection without losing freedom of movement. The guards contain no rigid hinges or long plastic sections extending over the entire shin.

During an impact, the insert helps cushion the applied energy and distribute loading over a wider area around the knee. Following a significant fall, it must be inspected for tearing, permanent deformation and other damage.

Anatomically curved construction

The guards are pre-shaped around the natural bend of the knee joint. They do not need to be excessively tightened around the leg simply to create the required form.

The curved profile helps keep the centre of the insert over the knee with the leg both extended and flexed. It also reduces excess material behind the knee, where bulk could create pressure during deeper movement.

A correctly fitted guard should follow the front of the knee and upper shin without rotating significantly, sliding down or gathering during movement.

Before the first ride, the child should perform several squats, walk around and adopt the normal riding position. The protective insert should remain in the intended position throughout these movements.

Padding around vulnerable knee areas

Soft padding surrounds the main insert and extends the contact area around the knee joint. It helps reduce pressure at the edges and improves comfort during longer training sessions.

Flexible materials fill the space between the leg and protective section, helping the guard follow the child’s anatomy more closely. The padding also separates the firmer insert from the skin or a thin base layer.

Its low-profile construction avoids unnecessary bulk and allows the protectors to be worn underneath suitably loose motocross or cycling trousers.

Breathable and durable technical fabric

The textile construction is designed for breathability, flexibility and durability during regular use. Perforated sections permit airflow around the knee and help release accumulated heat.

Ventilation is useful during motocross, enduro and off-road cycling, where the legs remain active and heat and moisture can quickly accumulate underneath trousers.

The fabric cannot prevent perspiration, but it supports continuous air exchange and faster drying than a completely closed material.

Its durable construction also helps protect the internal insert against regular wear. The textile section is not, however, standalone road equipment certified for a prolonged slide on asphalt.

Flexible neoprene construction

Neoprene sections help the guards adapt to the shape of the leg and changing muscle circumference during movement. The material keeps the insert close to the knee without creating hard edges.

The flexible construction simplifies fitting and supports comfort during longer use. Neoprene creates a continuous contact surface that also helps reduce unwanted movement.

Because neoprene may retain more warmth than an open mesh alone, the protectors should be allowed to dry thoroughly after every use.

Adjustable retaining straps

The protectors use adjustable hook-and-loop straps. These allow their circumference to be adapted to the young rider’s legs and any thin base layer being worn.

The straps should hold each guard securely enough to prevent rotation or downward movement. They must not be tightened to the point of restricting circulation, causing numbness or creating painful pressure marks.

Before riding, check that the straps are not twisted and sit evenly around the leg. Their adjustment should be tested with the knee both extended and flexed.

Where the guard moves during activity, the straps should be readjusted. Excessive tightening cannot compensate for an unsuitable fit.

Silicone grip elements

Silicone elements improve grip against the skin or a thin functional layer. They help reduce small movements during repeated knee flexion, vibration and changes in riding position.

The silicone sections supplement the retaining straps but cannot replace correct adjustment. Contact surfaces should be kept clean because perspiration, dust and detergent residue may reduce grip.

Where the silicone causes skin irritation, the guards can be tried over a thin functional layer provided that the insert remains stable.

Freedom of movement for young riders

The Acerbis Soft Knee Guard Kid contain no rigid articulated mechanism or long plastic shell. The knee can therefore flex naturally while controlling a motorcycle, walking or cycling.

The soft construction supports transitions between seated and standing riding, movement through corners and active motorcycle control over uneven terrain.

During cycling, the protectors leave room for repeated pedalling and changes of position. A correctly fitted guard should not press into the back of the knee or prevent full flexion.

Wearing underneath riding trousers

The low-profile construction is suitable for wearing underneath motocross, enduro and cycling trousers. The legs of the trousers must provide sufficient room and should not compress or displace the guards.

Overly tight trousers may roll the edges, move the insert away from the knee and restrict airflow. The complete equipment setup should therefore be tried on together before the first ride.

The protectors can be worn directly against the skin or over a thin functional base layer. The selected configuration must keep the protective insert stable.

For motocross use, also check the transition to the upper edge of the boots. The guards should not be pushed upwards by the boots or create uncomfortable contact when the knee bends.

One adjustable junior size

The model is supplied in one adjustable size designed for children. Its stretch construction and retaining straps allow it to accommodate different leg circumferences.

One-size labelling does not guarantee a correct fit for every child regardless of age, height and body proportions.

When trying the guards on, check:

  • that the main insert is centred over the knee,

  • coverage of the upper shin,

  • sufficient strap-adjustment range,

  • stability through full flexion and extension,

  • unrestricted circulation,

  • comfort behind the knee,

  • compatibility with trousers and motocross boots,

  • safe motorcycle or bicycle control.

Where a protector continues to move after adjustment or cannot be secured without excessive pressure, the fit is not suitable for the child.

EN 1621-1:2012 certification

The protectors comply with EN 1621-1:2012 for motorcycle limb-joint impact protection.

Certification confirms that the protective construction has passed the prescribed laboratory impact-transmission tests. Performance assumes correct fitting, stable positioning and an undamaged product.

The manufacturer does not state a specific Level 1 or Level 2 rating for this model. A particular level should therefore not be assigned without further supporting documentation.

The standard assesses impact attenuation within the specified protective area. It does not represent complete protection of the leg or a guarantee against every injury.

Further information is available in the protector certification overview.

Recommended use

The guards are suitable for:

  • junior motocross,

  • junior enduro,

  • pit-bike riding,

  • children’s ATV riding,

  • mountain biking,

  • enduro MTB,

  • BMX,

  • downhill,

  • bike parks,

  • other sporting activities involving a risk of knee impact.

When used outside motorsports, check whether the equipment meets the rules of the relevant discipline or sports facility.

Pre-ride inspection

Before every use, inspect:

  • the shape and condition of the protective inserts,

  • the textile material and seams,

  • the elasticity of the retaining straps,

  • the hook-and-loop fastenings,

  • the silicone grip elements,

  • tears and worn areas,

  • correct positioning on both legs.

Following a significant fall, inspect both guards carefully even where the inserts appear to have returned to their original shape.

A guard with a torn insert, permanently deformed material, damaged seams or faulty fastening should no longer be used.

Care

Follow the symbols and instructions on the product label. Aggressive detergents, solvents, bleach and high temperatures may damage the foam, neoprene, elastic straps and silicone components.

Do not wring the protectors by twisting them and do not dry them on a radiator, near an open flame or using another direct heat source.

Allow them to dry naturally at room temperature. They must be completely dry before storage and should not remain compressed underneath heavy equipment.
