Junior chest protector for motocross and enduro

The Acerbis Gravity Kid is a lightweight upper-body protector designed for junior motocross, enduro, pit-bike riding and other off-road disciplines. Rigid plastic panels cover the chest, back, shoulders and sides of the torso, helping protect young riders against stones, soil and other debris thrown up by motorcycle wheels.

The shaped panels are mounted on soft biofoam, which improves contact with the body and reduces pressure from the firmer components. An open, prominently structured construction supports airflow while keeping the weight suitable for a junior rider.

The size can be adjusted through the shoulder sections for riders approximately 125 to 160 cm tall. The manufacturer associates this range with an indicative age of 8 to 13 years, although actual height, body proportions and correct fitting are more important than age alone.

Chest, back, shoulder and side coverage

A front plastic panel covers the chest, while the rear section protects the back from direct contact with stones, branches and other objects encountered during off-road riding.

Adjustable shoulder sections and side panels extend coverage to areas left exposed by a simple front chest plate.

The individual components are positioned to provide coverage while leaving room for arm movement, forward lean over the handlebars and changes of riding position.

The Gravity Kid is primarily a stone and debris deflector. It is not complete body armour with Level 1 or Level 2 impact inserts certified under the EN 1621 series.

Structured plastic panels

The plastic components use a pronounced three-dimensional structure that divides their surface into smaller reinforced sections. This construction helps retain the required rigidity while reducing the amount of material and overall weight.

The open texture creates space for air to move around the chest and back. It helps limit heat accumulation underneath the protector, particularly when worn with a lightweight motocross jersey.

The construction cannot prevent perspiration, but its open design supports continuous ventilation and allows heat to escape more readily than a completely solid plastic panel.

Panels shaped for junior riders

Each plate is designed around the smaller torso of a young rider. The panels overlap and connect in a way that follows the front, rear and sides of the body without creating an unnecessarily bulky construction.

A correctly adjusted protector should sit close to the body without pressing into the neck, underarms or lower ribs. It should not rotate significantly or lift towards the helmet during movement.

Fitting should be checked in a riding position rather than only while standing. The child should lean forward, rotate the torso, raise both arms and test seated and standing riding positions.

Soft biofoam backing

The plastic panels are mounted on a soft biofoam base. This separates the rigid sections from the body and helps distribute pressure over a wider area.

The foam backing also improves contact with the chest and back. It allows the protector to follow the torso more closely instead of behaving like a hard plate resting directly against the body.

Biofoam contributes to comfort and cushioning during contact. The manufacturer does not list it as a separately certified Level 1 or Level 2 impact protector.

Adjustable shoulder protection

The shoulder sections can be adjusted according to the rider’s height and torso length. This changes the position of the front and rear panels and the overall vertical fit of the protector.

The front panel should cover the chest, the rear section should remain centred on the back and both shoulder components should rest evenly. The protector must not lean or create greater pressure on only one shoulder.

After adjustment, check that all retaining parts are secure and cannot loosen during riding.

Side protection

Side panels extend coverage around the hips and lower sides of the torso. They help protect against stones, branches, soil and contact with the motorcycle or surrounding terrain.

Their position must permit forward lean, torso rotation and unrestricted breathing. Excessively tight adjustment may be uncomfortable, while a loose protector may move during riding.

The side components are not separate hip protectors certified to EN 1621-1. They form part of the overall stone-deflector construction.

Low weight for young riders

Structured plastic panels and foam backing provide broad coverage without creating an unnecessarily heavy protector.

Low weight is particularly important for children because it limits loading on the shoulders and upper body. The rider can concentrate more effectively on motorcycle control and correct riding position.

The protector must still be fitted securely and evenly. Even a lightweight product can be uncomfortable when incorrectly adjusted or unsuitable for the child’s proportions.

Freedom of movement

Open sides and separate protective sections leave room for movement of the shoulders, arms and torso. The child can lean over the handlebars, shift position through corners and move between seated and standing riding.

The shoulder components should not extend into the underarms or restrict the raising of the arms. The lower edge must not strike the thighs or be pushed upwards during forward lean.

Actual mobility also depends on the jersey, jacket, neck protector and other equipment being used.

Adjustment for heights from 125 to 160 cm

The protector is intended for children approximately 125 to 160 cm tall. The manufacturer gives an indicative age range of 8 to 13 years.

Age is only a guide. Children of the same age can differ significantly in height, torso length and chest circumference, so the actual fit must always be checked.

When trying it on, verify:

  • coverage over the centre of the chest,

  • position of the rear panel,

  • even placement over both shoulders,

  • free movement of the arms and head,

  • stability during forward lean,

  • sufficient room for breathing,

  • compatibility with the jersey, helmet and other protectors.

Compatibility with neck protection

When used with a neck collar or brace, check that the different products do not push one another away from their intended positions. The upper edges of the chest protector should not lift the neck protector towards the helmet or restrict normal head movement.

The full setup must be tested together with the helmet. The child should be able to follow the track and rotate the head without painful pressure.

Compatibility depends on the particular neck protector and the rider’s body proportions.

Wearing underneath or over a jersey

The Gravity Kid can be worn underneath or over a motocross jersey according to preference and the rest of the equipment. When worn underneath, the jersey must be loose enough not to compress or displace the protector.

Wearing it over the jersey makes the position and condition of the individual components easier to inspect. The protector must still be secured properly to reduce the risk of snagging.

In either configuration, check freedom of movement through the arms and torso before riding.

EN 14021:2003 certification

The manufacturer lists chest, back, shoulder and side protection to EN 14021:2003. This standard relates to protection against stones and other small objects thrown up by motorcycle wheels during off-road riding.

EN 14021:2003 is not the same as the EN 1621-2 impact standard for back protectors or EN 1621-3 for chest protectors. This model therefore has no stated Level 1 or Level 2 impact rating.

The protector helps reduce the effects of contact with stones, soil and other debris, but it cannot prevent every injury resulting from a fall or collision.

More information about the different standards is available in the protector certification guide.

Recommended use

The Acerbis Gravity Kid is particularly suitable for:

  • junior motocross,

  • junior enduro,

  • pit-bike riding,

  • children’s ATV riding,

  • training on closed tracks,

  • recreational off-road riding.

It should be used together with a correctly selected helmet, motocross boots, gloves, knee protection and other equipment appropriate for the child’s age and type of riding.

Pre-ride inspection

Before every use, inspect:

  • the plastic panels for cracks,

  • the condition of the biofoam,

  • the shoulder adjustments,

  • the side components,

  • all straps, buckles and connecting parts,

  • permanent deformation,

  • correct adjustment for the child.

Following a significant fall, inspect the complete product even if no damage is immediately visible. A cracked, deformed or incomplete protector should no longer be used.

Care

Follow the instructions on the product label when cleaning. Plastic parts can generally be wiped with a soft damp cloth without aggressive chemicals.

Do not expose the protector to solvents, high temperatures or direct heat sources. After riding, allow it to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area.

Every component must be dry before storage. The protector should not remain compressed underneath heavy objects that could alter its shape.
