What to really consider when choosing an MX jersey
A motocross jersey is not just about looks or colors. Once you spend a few hours on the track or in the woods, you will quickly recognize the difference between a jersey that works and one that starts to restrict you.
In summer, you mainly deal with heat and ventilation. In enduro, durability, comfort under the protectors and whether the jersey does not press on you in any places during a longer ride.
And that is why there is no one-size-fits-all jersey.
When choosing, it mainly depends on:
- riding style,
- weather,
- type of protectors,
- how the jersey fits you when moving on the motorcycle.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A JERSEY?
1. Ventilation and material
In the heat, you can tell a quality jersey within the first few minutes of riding. Cheap or heavy materials quickly soak up sweat, become heavy, and stick uncomfortably to the body.
That's why today's MX jerseys are mainly made of lightweight polyester, which:
- dries quickly,
- wicks away sweat well,
- and remains light even during longer rides.
Lightweight and well-ventilated models with perforated panels are best for summer motocross or fast enduro.
On the other hand, for the forest, mud, or colder weather, most riders will appreciate a slightly stronger material that will last a while.
The jersey and protectors must work together
One of the most common mistakes is the wrong combination of jersey and protectors.
If you wear a protective vest under your jersey, you need a more flexible or looser cut. The jersey must not pull at the shoulders or restrict movement when riding standing up.
On the other hand, if you wear a classic “shell” over your jersey, you can choose a narrower or sportier cut.
Also important are:
- a longer back,
- a comfortable collar,
- and sleeves that don’t press under your gloves.
WHAT CUT MAKES SENSE?
Slim-fit cut
A sportier and more fitted option.
Suitable for:
- for racing riding,
- lighter protectors,
- and riders who want the least resistance and freedom of movement.
Classic looser cut
A more comfortable option for:
- hobby riding,
- enduro,
- and larger protectors under their jersey.
Most hobby riders will end up with a slightly looser cut anyway, mainly for comfort during longer rides.
What do modern MX jerseys offer today?
Today, quality motocross jerseys are not just “a piece of polyester”. The difference is mainly in the details.
Better models have:
- more flexible materials,
- perforated ventilation zones,
- minimum seams in stressed areas,
- and lighter cuts for greater comfort.
For example, Acerbis jerseys use lightweight stretch materials that work well especially when actively moving on a motorcycle.
With more expensive models, you will notice the difference mainly:
- on longer rides,
- in the heat,
- when you ride all day with protectors.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE?
A jersey that is too big will sag and get caught. A jersey that is too small will start to pull in the shoulders and restrict movement.
It is best to choose:
- according to your chest circumference,
- your height,
- ideally also according to the type of protectors you are wearing.
If you are between sizes:
- with a slim-fit cut, a larger size usually helps,
- with a classic cut, the space is usually larger from the factory.
MEFO RECOMMENDS AND ADVICE
When trying on a new jersey, it is not enough to stand in front of a mirror. Try the position you would when riding – hands forward, a slight lean forward and shoulder movement. The jersey is not worn over your pants, it is tucked into your pants.
If you ride mainly in the summer, focus more on ventilation than on thick material. One type of jersey will not solve the whole season.
Many riders only consider the length of the sleeves, but comfort in the shoulders and chest when riding standing is much more important.
CHILDREN'S MOTOCROSS JERSEYS
Parents often buy a larger size for children's clothing "as a spare". However, a jersey that is too big is more likely to hinder the child.
Loose sleeves:
- they ride over the wrists,
- they interfere with working with the levers,
- the protectors under the jersey then fit poorly.
A children's jersey should be:
- light,
- breathable,
- most importantly comfortable when moving.
Children also overheat faster than adults, so ventilation plays an even greater role.
Print and your own name on the jersey
Today, it is common to have your own name or starting number on the jersey.
The best solution is sublimation printing, where the graphics are directly part of the material. The jersey remains light, flexible and well ventilated.
On the other hand, classic iron-on transfers:
- reduce ventilation,
- crack over time,
- and tend to be heavier.
How to wash an MX jersey correctly?
Mud, dust, and sweat take their toll on the material, but most damage is caused by improper washing.
- wash at a maximum of 40°C,
- do not use fabric softener,
- always fasten the Velcro fasteners on other gear.
Velcro fasteners often damage the delicate structure of the material much more than the riding itself.
Do not dry jerseys in the dryer. It is best to let them air dry.

SUMMARY
You can tell the right MX jersey by riding it, not by the photo in the catalog.
The important thing is:
- that it is well ventilated,
- that it does not restrict movement,
- that it works with your protectors,
- and that it is comfortable even after several hours on the bike.
For motocross, most riders will appreciate lightweight and well-ventilated models. For enduro or longer rides, a more comfortable and durable option often makes more sense.
Whether you ride the track, the forest or hobby enduro, you can tell a well-chosen jersey mainly by the fact that you hardly notice it while riding.
