Acerbis Handguards – How to Choose the Right Model for Motocross, Enduro and Adventure Riding

A low-speed fall, a branch striking the handlebars or contact with a rock. A single incident like this can damage a lever and bring a ride or race to an end. That is why handguards are useful equipment for motocross riders, enduro riders and owners of adventure motorcycles.

Acerbis handguards are designed to protect both the levers and the rider’s hands when riding off-road or on the road. The range includes lightweight open models for motocross, durable wrap-around versions for enduro and adventure motorcycles, as well as models designed for specific types of brake and clutch master cylinders.

This article explains the differences between the individual types and what to consider when choosing a suitable model.

Why choose Acerbis handguards?

Acerbis has been manufacturing motorcycle plastics and protective components since 1973. Its long experience is reflected not only in the design of individual models, but also in the availability of spare parts, which means that damage does not necessarily require replacing the entire set.

The main advantages of Acerbis handguards include:

  • durable plastic materials,
  • open and wrap-around designs for different types of use,
  • universal and model-specific mounting systems,
  • replaceable plastic shells and other spare parts,
  • a wide range of colour options.

Another major advantage is the availability of individual components. If only the plastic shell is damaged, it is usually enough to replace that part rather than buy an entirely new handguard.

Open or wrap-around handguards?

The most important question when choosing is where you ride most often.

Open handguards

Open handguards are primarily suitable for motocross and sport enduro. Their design keeps the handlebars lightweight and does not restrict motorcycle control. They protect the levers from flying stones, branches and minor contact while riding.

If you mainly ride on a motocross track or in less demanding enduro terrain, this type is usually the most common choice.

K-Future

The K-Future model is intended for motorcycles with Brembo or Magura brake and clutch master cylinders. It mounts directly to the master cylinders, so no additional handlebar clamp is required. This is especially useful on modern motorcycles where space around the handlebars is limited.

X-Ultimate

X-Ultimate features removable upper and lower covers. Depending on the weather or conditions, the handguard can be adapted within moments for better airflow or greater protection from mud.

Uniko

The Uniko range is popular for its simple design, good ventilation and broad compatibility. Ventilation openings support airflow around the hands and brake fluid reservoirs, which is particularly useful in warm weather.

Wrap-around handguards

Wrap-around handguards are designed for enduro, hard enduro, rally and adventure motorcycles. A metal reinforcement helps protect the levers and brake and clutch master cylinders in a fall or upon impact with branches, rocks or other obstacles.

If you frequently ride in forests or take longer trips away from paved roads, they are generally more suitable than open designs.

X-Factory

The X-Factory model combines a plastic shell with metal reinforcement. Thanks to available replacement plastics, damaged parts can be replaced easily without buying an entirely new set.

X-Factor

X-Factor is designed for more demanding use in enduro, hard enduro and on adventure motorcycles. The solid aluminium reinforcement increases resistance to falls and contact with fixed obstacles.

Argon

The Argon model is designed primarily for road and adventure motorcycles. The adjustable upper spoiler helps provide better protection for the hands from wind, rain and cold on longer journeys.

What to consider when choosing

When choosing handguards, we recommend considering primarily:

  • type of motorcycle,
  • intended use,
  • type of brake and clutch master cylinders,
  • handlebar diameter,
  • required level of protection.

Not every model is suitable for every motorcycle. For some handguards, compatibility with the specific type of handlebars or controls must be checked.

Correct installation is just as important as the choice

Even high-quality handguards will only work correctly when installed properly.

For wrap-around models, pay attention to the seating of the expansion inserts inside the handlebar ends. Before installation, lightly grease the metal parts. This will make future removal easier and help reduce corrosion.

After installation, always check that the throttle grip returns freely and that no part of the handguard restricts its movement.

Did you know?

The Acerbis range also includes the Vision model with integrated LED lighting. It is intended for riders who travel in more demanding conditions or return from rides in reduced visibility.

Summary

Open handguards are suitable for motocross and sport enduro, where low weight and unrestricted handlebar movement are important. Wrap-around models are useful for enduro, hard enduro and adventure riders who want better protection for the levers in a fall or upon contact with an obstacle.

If you are unsure about the choice or compatibility with your motorcycle, we will be happy to advise you on a suitable model and the necessary mounting accessories.
