What to take with you on an enduro tour to Albania or Romania?
What to bring on an enduro trip to Albania or Romania? You can tackle an adventure motorcycle trip to Romania or Albania without stress when your bike is properly prepared, your gear is certified, and you carry a few extra kilograms of useful luggage.
Southwestern Albania and the iconic SH8 road running just above the sea, or a remote forest logging track in the Romanian Carpathians. Half-broken asphalt, half gravel and breathtaking views. And by the roadside lies a motorcycle with a broken lever and a punctured engine cover. The rider has no basic tools, no spare parts and is wearing soft boots that may look great in town, but leave their feet aching after an hour off-road.
This scene is repeated in the Balkans every season. Not because riders are careless, but simply because they do not realise that a multi-day trip on a heavier adventure bike requires completely different preparation from a weekend ride on Czech back roads.

Preparing the Motorcycle: Protecting the Frame and Engine
On Romanian forest roads and in Albanian mountain passes, sooner or later there will be a moment when the motorcycle goes down or a sharp stone shoots out from under the front wheel. Before you set off, your bike must be prepared for unplanned contact with the terrain.
In the protective equipment for adventure motorcycles section of our range, you will find all the protective equipment that can make the difference between a minor scratch and an unnecessary end to your trip.
- Handguards with aluminium reinforcement: Handguards keep the brake and clutch levers intact even after a hard impact with a rock. You will not get far in the Albanian mountains without a clutch. Our proven options include Acerbis ADV I and the robust Acerbis X-Factory handguards, suitable for example for the CF MOTO 450 MT 2024-25.
- Engine and cover protection: A durable skid plate protects the underside of the engine from punctures. For protection from the sides, plastic engine-cover guards are useful because they absorb impacts on gravel. We offer moulded Acerbis skid plates designed specifically for popular adventure motorcycles (for example, a skid plate for the Yamaha Tenere 700, a skid plate for the CFMOTO 450 MT or a skid plate for the KTM Adventure 390).
- Frame protection: Plastic frame guards protect the paintwork and structure from boot scuffs and flying stones.
- Extended range: For long stretches through remote areas without a petrol station, high-capacity fuel tanks are a practical solution (for example, the Acerbis 23 L tank for the Royal Enfield Himalayan).
Practical tip: Always carry spare levers, metal repair epoxy for engine covers, a basic tool kit and spare fuses.
Helmet and Clothing: Where It Does Not Pay to Cut Corners
When choosing your equipment, safety standards set clear minimum requirements.
A Helmet Certified to ECE 22.06
The ECE 22.06 safety standard tests helmets for oblique impacts and head rotation, which are among the most common risks in a real motorcycle crash. Older ECE 22.05 helmets are still being sold by online shops at attractive prices, but the newer certification provides a substantially higher level of protection.
For a combination of asphalt and gravel, an enduro helmet with a peak and visor is ideal. One option in our range is the Acerbis Attack adventure helmet – it offers good aerodynamics on fast road sections, effective ventilation for hot days, Pinlock compatibility to prevent fogging and the wide field of view you need off-road.
CE Level 2 Clothing
Adventure riding clothing must be comfortable for a full day in the saddle as well as a short walk while looking for the route.
- Look for jackets and trousers fitted with CE Level 2 certified protectors (shoulders, elbows, knees and back).
- Level 2 protectors absorb significantly more impact energy than basic Level 1 protectors.
- Brands such as Acerbis offer well-designed textile suits with removable membranes and large ventilation panels, suitable for both Balkan heat and unexpected rain.

Boots and Tyres: Contact Points with the Terrain
Adventure Boots: A Compromise Without Unnecessary Risk
An adventure boot is always a compromise between protection and comfort, but ankle protection is not something you can compromise on. You need footwear that supports the ankle if the motorcycle pins it down, while still allowing you to walk to a petrol station or explore a historic town centre.
One option in our range is the Acerbis Grimsel leather enduro boot. It combines a reinforced construction and ankle protection with comfort that you will appreciate when you step off the footpegs at the end of the day. It features a durable leather upper and sturdy buckles that hold the foot securely, along with a treaded sole that provides grip on the footpegs and on wet rocks.
Tyres: How to Choose the Right Tread Pattern
Tyres determine what you can safely attempt off-road. When choosing adventure tyres, you will often see a ratio indicating their intended off-road and road use:
- 70/30 tread pattern (mostly road): A tyre with a smoother tread. It provides a quiet ride on the motorway, but offers little grip on wet Balkan gravel or in mud and will begin to slide immediately.
- 50/50 tread pattern (equal road and off-road use): A deeper block tread that bites into rocks and mud in the Albanian mountains and Romanian forests, while still allowing you to cover hundreds of kilometres safely on asphalt. For the Balkans, it is the most versatile option.
Fixing a Puncture: Why Heavy-Duty Tubes Are Worth It
Most adventure motorcycles have spoked wheels with an inflated rubber inner tube inside, just like a bicycle. If you hit a sharp rock at speed off-road, the impact compresses the enduro tyre against the rim and pinches the tube inside.
In the Albanian mountains without a mobile signal, roadside assistance will not save you — you have to deal with the problem yourself:
- Heavy-duty inner tubes as prevention: A standard thin tube punctures easily. It therefore makes sense to fit extra-thick, so-called Heavy Duty tubes before the trip. Their special rubber walls can be several millimetres thick and withstand an impact with a sharp stone without damage.
- What to carry in your tool kit: Your luggage must include a spare inner tube and tyre levers (special metal levers used to remove the tyre manually from the rim so that you can replace a punctured tube).
Luggage and Navigation: How to Pack and Avoid Getting Lost
Aluminium or Textile?
When choosing motorcycle luggage for an adventure bike, riders generally divide into two camps:
- Aluminium cases: Durable, lockable and waterproof. In a fall, they also act as a protective frame around the rear of the motorcycle.
- Textile panniers and horseshoe bags (for example, SW-Motech): Lighter, safer for your legs when paddling through off-road sections and more affordable.
Parameter | Aluminium cases | Textile panniers / Side bags |
Crash resistance | High (absorbs the impact) | Medium (may be abraded) |
Set weight | approx. 4–6 kg | approx. 1.5–3 kg |
Leg safety off-road | Risk of trapping the leg when paddling | Safe and soft |
Lockability | Yes (solid lock) | Limited (zip locks required) |
Suitability for difficult terrain | Good | Very good |
The golden rule of packing: The total weight of your luggage should not exceed 18–20 kg. Every additional kilogram noticeably changes the motorcycle's centre of gravity and handling off-road.
Navigation
Phones with Google Maps are useful as a backup, but they can overheat in direct sunlight and do not work without a signal. Use a dedicated motorcycle sat-nav (Garmin Zumo) or offline apps (Mapy.cz / OsmAnd) with maps downloaded directly to the device.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
What are you required to carry on a motorcycle in Romania and Albania?
- Romania: Driving licence, vehicle registration document, Green Card, reflective vest (it must be easily accessible, not at the bottom of a case) and a motorcycle first-aid kit.
- Albania: In addition to the same documents, you are required to carry a warning triangle; compact folding versions are available for motorcycles. We recommend keeping physical copies of all documents separately from the originals.
What should you wear for adventure motorcycle touring?
Adventure riding clothing must cope with two extremes: hot days on the move and sudden changes in mountain weather. A layered system is essential. For summer, a lightweight jacket with large mesh panels is a practical choice (for example, Acerbis Ramsey Vented 2.0 CE). It keeps the certified protectors exactly where they need to be in a fall while providing effective ventilation. Always carry a lightweight waterproof over-suit in your luggage. Complete the outfit with tall boots offering firm ankle protection and a helmet with a peak and visor.
What are the best areas and routes for adventure motorcycle riding in Albania?
The northern Albanian Alps, particularly the area around Theth National Park and the Valbona Valley, are among the top destinations, combining more demanding mountain gravel tracks with impressive scenery. The south-western coast is another good option, with the iconic SH8 road crossing the Llogara Pass and unpaved routes branching inland. For a continuous off-road route, consider the Albanian section of the Trans Euro Trail (TET), which passes through remote mountain villages around Përmet and Gjirokastër.
What are the best areas and routes for adventure motorcycle riding in Romania?
To combine good-quality asphalt with off-road detours, head for the iconic Transfăgără?an (DN7C) and Transalpina (DN67C) mountain passes. For dedicated adventure riding and seemingly endless gravel, the Apuseni Mountains and the Southern Carpathians offer thousands of kilometres of forest tracks and unpaved roads. Riders looking for wilderness and remote mountain trails will also enjoy the northern region of Maramure?. In Romania, you can also follow the official TET (Trans Euro Trail) route.
How should beginners choose boots for adventure touring?
Avoid low urban boots and soft trainers. Look for tall boots with reinforced shin protection and firm ankle support. The boot must keep your foot stable while you are standing on the footpegs.
What should you add to an expanded first-aid kit for an adventure motorcycle trip?
In addition to the basics, pack an elastic bandage, blister plasters, activated charcoal or medication for digestive problems, ibuprofen, insect repellent, disinfectant and haemostatic gauze to control bleeding. Print the roadside-assistance telephone number on paper and keep it with your documents.
